16 GOING ON 17

                                                                    16 GOING ON 17

16 going on 17. Now that would make a catchy tune title,
would it not? Oh, I forgot, Rogers and Hammerstein
have already been there, and done that. Of course, if you
per chance read some of my previous columns you realize
that the little ditty I am whistling actually refers to the
requiem known as our national debt that whizzed past
the 16 trillion dollar mark on September 4, 2012, which
just happened to be the opening day of the Democratic
                                        National Converntion. How apropos.

The school bell has rung and many an eager learner has
returned to the classroom hoping to increase their know-
ledge of topics important. It is too bad that our politicians
are not among them. Ah, but what can we say? Once a
                                        dullard, always a dullard.

If you have bills to pay, groceries to buy, gas tanks to
fill, but no money in the bank, wouldn't you think you
had a real financial problem? If month after month,
you cannot balance your home budget, and you can't
borrow any more money because all of your credit
cards are maxed out, wouldn't alarm bells go off in
your head? Of course, they would, and right now
millions of families in America are faced with these
                                        problems.

Unfortunately, our federal government is faced with
similar financial burdens, but its dilemma is now 16
trillion times worse than any middle class homeowner's
                                        misfortune.

In 2013, if the Democrats remain in power, we are
surely likely to add another 4 trillion dollars to our
national debt and further pull our country into an
an economic abyss, with absolutely no hope of
                                        recovery.

If the Republicans gain the White House
and both houses of Congress, there's a slim
chance that they could stop our national debt from
sliding the U. S. into an economic oblivion. But the
chance is slim, very slim, indeed.

Back in October, 2012 I consulted my guess-o-meter,
and picked the very exact day (November 16, 2011).
that America's debt would excede 15 trillion dollars.

I then predicted that we would pass $16 trillion on Sept.
16, 2012. This time, my guess-o-meter was 12 days late.
But, by landing on the opening day (September 4, 2012)
of the Democratic National Convention, proof was given
that irony was still alive and well.

This time, my trusty (?) meter predicts we shall pass the
17 trillion dollar mark on June 16, 2013. (But with QE3
just implemented today by Mr. Bernake, the threshold
                                        could come much sooner).

Have you ever stood by the shore of Niagra Falls?
                                        Just asking.

BIGOTRY AT THE DNC

                                                                  BIGOTRY AT THE DNC

On September 5,2012, millions of viewers
saw the faces of bigotry and hatred displayed
by more than half of the delegates at the
                                                   Democratic National Convention.
Upon having to vote yea or nay to reinstating
references to God and Jerusalem into their
party platform, more than half of the delegates
assembled loudly screamed "NO." Three times
the vote was given and three times "NO" was
the answer of half of the delegate responders.
The chairman of the convention finally stated
that the resolution to reinstate was carried by
two-thirds of the delegates. This was followed
                                                   by loud and angry boos.
Surely, a political party with so many
delegates that are anti-Jewish and anti-God,
should be more than watched carefully. Indeed,
it should be voted out of office.

RUNNIN' ON FUMES

                                          RUNNIN' ON FUMES

During during Memorial Day/week, we let our gas tank go to
empty and ran on the fumes, assuming gas prices would draw down
once the holidays were over. Runnin' on fumes is a risky way to cruise
                down the interstate.
Unfortunately, the United States (as well as most of Europe) has
been traveling along in a similar fashion since the start of the 21st century.
Probably before the month of October, 2012 begins, the U.S.
will find itself itself $16 Trillion dollars in debt. And there is now a
50% chance of the Federal Reserve instituting QE3 (Quantitative
                Easing for the third time).

Unfortunately, neither political party knows how to stop this rapidly
increasing financial problem. The U.S. draws ever nearer to bankruptcy.
When you can smell the fumes, empty is not far behind.

TEBOW OR NOT TEBOW, THAT IS THE QUESTION

12/17/2011

I haven't had a great interest in pro football for a long time.
(My disenchantment goes way back to when my (everybody in Maryland
used "my" when refering to) my Baltimore Colts who were taken by their
owner and moved at midnight to Indiana many decades ago. What's the
name of the city? I can't remember.)
But,  my interest has slightlincreased this season, with  the emergence
of TimTebow who has stirred up a large amount of media attention by
kneeling and offering a short prayer during the game. (only he and God
knows for sure what he says, but his admirers love him and his detractors
        don't
.
I suppose it's okay to pray in public. If I had been a Christian back in
the early Roman coliseum days, I probably would have prayed in public, too.
But, during a pro football game? I'm not too sure.
I could be wrong, but I don't believe Jesus would have been a public
touchdown prayer advocate. But, I am of the opinion that he would have
been in favor of public schools allowing a vocal or silent prayer prior to
        the start of a game.

Actually, Jesus told us to go into our closet, close the door, and
pray to our Father in secret, who will then reward us openly (Matthew 6:6).
Whether perfectly religiously correct or not, it is obvious, that "Tebowing" has
now, for better or worse,  been entered into the lexicon of football terminology.
Three cheers for the home team!

WOODCHUCK CHUCKING WOOD

WOODCHUCKING WOOD
(Published Deseret Morning News, January 25, 2011)

How much wood can a woodchuck chuck
before his teeth fall out? America is about to find out,
especially if the woodchuck's wood is compared to this
country's $14 trillion dollars of indebtedness, which
continues to grow much faster than any woodchuck
chucking wood.
Very soon, this old woodchuck will bite off more
than he can chew. At which point, we may find our
pockets and purses are full of wooden nickels.

15 GOING ON 16

Five weeks ago, I wrote a letter to the Deseret News
(published 13 Oct 2011) in which I said "Sometime
within the next 5 weeks,the federal government's
debt load will advance to the 15 trillion dollar
level.
And  wouldn't you know it I hit the nail on the head
right to the day (November 16, the last day of the
full 5 weeks.
Wow, how did I do that. By putting massive numbers
together with a small dose of quantitative easing?
Reading tea leaves? Crunching a fortune cookie?
Brilliant sluething? A highly educated guess?

Who knows? Who Cares? The really important facts
to consider are these: We have passed 15 trillion,
and it ain't (pardon my French) coming back. Next
up, 16 trillion. We can't stop this freight train
from barrelling forward. One of these days, it will
slip off the rails and make the evening news.

PEGGY NOONAN

The words contradictory and ironic come to mind as I write this article
Because I wanted to write a glowing article about my favorite writer,
Peggy Noonan,  long time journalist for the Wall Street Journal.
However, you just might find an O.Hernry twist at the end.
I like Peggy's writing. Very easy to read. No ten dollar words.
Just simple one-dollar ones that I can understand. (I like George
Will. too, but every time I read him, I have to use a dictionary.)

An excellent example of Ms. Noonan's writing was her editorial
"The Divider and the Thinker," (Wall Street Journal, October 28,2011,
in which she contrasts the thinking ability of President Obama and
Representative Paul Ryan---except for her last sentence in which
she veers off into the realm of the inaccurately inplied that Mr.
Obama's popularity numbers had been going up.
Unfortunately, on the same day Peggy wrote this line, Obama’s
popularity had fallen to 42% and his handling of the economy had
landed at 35% as reported by Fox news.

(However, two days after I wrote this, Mr. Obama's numbers
dramatically, thanks to the Herman Cain mess. So, she wasn't far
off the mark.)

NOTHING CHANGES IN WASHINGTON

11/7/2011

Deseret News, Dec 29, 2010
Republicans have reclaimed the House
and gained seats in the Senate, but
the triumvirate of Obama, Reid, and Pelosi
are solidly entrenched in Washington.

The just finished congressional lame duck session
proved the Democrats are firmly in control and can
pass any legislation they desire. Republicans still
remain the same old go along party as usual.

The Democrats' agenda has remained the same
for the past 80 years: take money from the rich,
give it to the unions, always expand the federal
government, spend more, tax more, regulate more.

This has always been their simple plan.
It will be in force over the next two years.

THE WORM MAY BE TURNING

11/7/2011

In Henry VI, part 3, Shakespeare has Lord Clifford,
the Earl of Oxford, or anonymous speak the following lines:

To whom do lions cast their gentle looks
Not to the beast that would usurp their den
The smallest worm will turn being trodden on,
And the doves will peck in safegaurd of their brood

Whether the Republicans like it or not, the nation's
economy, that gigantically, hugh worm in America's
woodshed may be turning. And it just may be turning
for the better, which every politician knows is the number
one key to being re-elected. The turn around in the economy
worked well for Clinton and Reagan. It could do the same
for Obama.
Private industry profits just may save the worm from
being squashed.
