(The following is one of a series of articles
we wrote while taking what became known
to our family in 1977 as our Great Western
Trek, as we travelled from Maryland to Utah.)
A FEW SOREHEADS
As we passed by the town of Stanton ,
Texas, we read the following billboard
allurement...
"Welcome to Stanton...Home of 3,000
friendly people, and a few soreheads".
Unfortunately, due to the press of time, we
were unable to visit what must be one of
America's more honest towns.
While we would enjoy the handshakes
and appreciate the hospitality of those
"friendly" folk, we highly suspect we would
not feel too out of place sitting down to a lively
beef and bull barbecue in the company of a
few of those more colorful and enjoyable
...soreheads. How would or could any town
better itself without them
If we ever get the chance, we'd like to go
back to Stanton for a short visit with those
wonderful, bullheaded rascals.
