                                                                        FIVE IN A ROW

Did you know you can tell something,
even if only vaguely, about a person's
financial status by what he eats for lunch?

Last week, (all of our creditors please take
note) our wife, for five days in a row, packed
in our dune-buggy lunch box, a solitary meal
                                                       of peanut and butter sandwiches.

Now, when anyone asks us how we are able
to keep our weight down, we tell that we are
on a strict carbohydrate diet...and that we
                                                       worry alot.

At least with this diet, we don't have to worry
about foods with a high cholesterol content or
an over exposure to high protein side effects,
And the adverse monetary consequences are
                                                       nearly negligible.

(Our stomach just gastrically interrupted us and
suggested that we ask our wife to slip in a bologna
sandwich into our lunchbox, at least every five days
                                                       just to break the monotony.

THE SIMPLE THING #460

                                                         THE SIMPLE THING

One of our favorites stories is found in
Second Kings, chapter five of the Old                                                                                 Testament.

It is the story of Naaman, the mighty Syrian
                                             Army Captain. Heroic. Honorable. Valiant.
But, alas, he was a leper.
He traveles to Israel to see Elisha the Prophet.
Elisha tells him to do a very simple thing...
go wash seven times in the Jordan River...
                                             and be healed.

But like most of us, Naaman was full of pride
and his vanity would not permit him to do
                                             the simple thing.

                                             Finally, Naaman's servants persuaded him
to do the simple thing, and as soon as he did,
"his flesh became as healthy as a little child's...
                                             and he was healed."

Alas, the world continues to entice us to do that
which is complicated. But the Lord continues to
offer us the way and the ways of simplicity.
                                             When will ever learn?

Pineapple Upside-Down Cake   #459

                                                                 PINEAPPLE UPSIDE CAKE

Recently, Donna fixed us a delious pineapple
                                       upside-down cake.

Now the reason it tasted so good (in addition
to our wife's culinary expertise) is that, instead
of simply laying a few slices of pineapple on top
of a sheet cake, she used "crushed" pineapple, and
the juices from all of the Hawaiian fruit soaked
all the way  through to the bottom of the pan.

Through this experience of tasting such a
scrumptious dessert, we have learned the following
                                       about love...

God does not desire us to give out slices of
love, or even chunks of love.

Rather, He prefers us and babes us to become
crushed in our vanity and pride and become drenched
with His love, and become so saturated with His love
that every moment in our lives, and every person
touched by our lives, becomes delighted with Our Lord
because... of the taste we leave in their hears and
                                       minds.

THE WORST LIAR

                                                      THE WORST LIAR

Rudyard Kipling gave us this terse truth...
"Of all the liars in the world, sometimes the
                                         worst are your own fears."

Fear of poverty has made many of us....greedy
Fear of rejection has made many of us...introverted
Fear of failure has made many of us....middle class
Fear of tomorrow has made many of us....procrastinators
Fear of the unknown has made of us....unknowledgeable
Fear of the light has made most of us....secretive.

Mankind proceeds in an upward direction
only as we supplant his fearsome lies
                                         with some wholesome faith.

                                                     Talk ye all
                                                      of his wondrous
                                                        works
Glory ye in his holy name
Let the heart of them rejoice
                                                      that seek the Lord

Seek the Lord and his strength
                                                           and his face evermore

HELP US MAKE OUR DAY GO THROUGH

HELP US MAKE OUR DAY GO THROUGH

"An open hand, an easy shoe
And a hope to make the day go through"
                                          --Author Unknown

When dark perils thick surround us
At the dawning of the day
Give us words to greatly cheer us
As our trust in thee holds sway
Turn our gray, gray skies to blue
Help us make our day go through

Give us Lord thy calm assurance
Lead us gently by thy hand
Quit us with thy spirit's armour
Let his promptings be our command
When risks are high and friends are few
Help us make our day go through

Let thy hand, O Lord, be open
Give our foot an easy shoe
Give us hope that produces courage
To do the things we ought to do
Wake us to thy loving kindness
And help us make our day go through

THAT SOLID ROCK

                                                      THAT SOLID ROCK

"No sensible man," wrote Ernest Haycox,
"watches his feet hit the ground." He looks ahead
to see what kind of ground they'll hit next."

When we were children, our mother used
to admonish us during rainy weather. "Watch
your step," she would say, be careful where you
                                       are walking."

As we might ponder our lives, which, of all
our steps that we take in life, are the most
                                       important ones?

Would we not be within the mark to suggest
that the steps that we take now determine
where we might be stepping in the future?

And, unfortunately, too many of us waste
too much of ourtime remembering and retracing
the steps of our past and its mistakes.

Let us look ahead. Keep our eyes open
for higher ground, solid ground, so that
at the end of our life's journey, we may
be found standing firm on that solid Rock

                                                          PSALM 104:1,13,24,31,33,34

Bless the Lord, O my soul
                                            O Lord, my God
                                              Thou art very great
                                              Thou art clothed
                                              With honour and majesty

                                            He watereth the hills
                                            From his chambers
                                              The earth is satisfied
With the fruit of thy works

O Lord, how manifest thy works
                                               In thy wisdom
                                                thou hast made them all
The earth is full of thy riches

The glory of the Lord shall endue forever
The Lord shall rejoice in his works

I will sing unto the Lord
                                             As long as I live
                                               I will sing praise
                                                 To my God
                                                   While I have my being

My meditation of him shall be sweet
I will be glad in the Lord

                                                                            WE SHALL LISTEN

                                                           O Lord
                                                           We shall listen
                                                           To the quietness
                                                           Of thy voice
                                                           We shall listen
                                                           For those calm
                                                           Unspoken words
                                                           That shall cause
                                                           Our hearts to melt
                                                           We shall listen
                                                           And shall hear
                                                           Of thy goodness
                                                           And thy grace
                                                           We shall listen
                                                           We shall learn
                                                           And we shall love

PUFF-NICKEL (1978)

                                                                          PUFF-NICKEL (1978)

It was nearly five years ago that we stopped
by our sister's home and picked out a black and
white and golden brown calico kitten and took
                                    her home with us.

At that time, one of our children wanted to
call her Puffy, while another wanted to name her,
Nickel. Hence, the compromise name, Puff-Nickel.

Although we were raised with several dogs
for boy-hood pets, this was the first cat to so
                                    literally cross our path.

We have thoroughly enjoyed her. She amused
                                    us in many ways.

She insists on being clean and often spends
hours washing herself. She is very prissy at times.
She usually wears a large turned-up grin. Her eyes
usually let us know when she feels annoyed.

(In addition to adding a touch of silent beauty
to our home, Puff-Nickel makes an excellent
                                    foot-warmer.)
