                            ISAIAH 54:7,8,10

                            For a small moment
                            have I forsaken thee
                            but with great mercies
                            will I gather thee

In a little wrath I hid
                            my face from thee
                            for a moment

But, with everlasting kindness
will I have mercy on thee,
                            Saith the Lord thy Redeemer

                            For the mountains shall depart
                            and the hills be removed
But my kindness shall not depart
                            from thee,

                            Neither shall the covenant
                            of my peace, be removed,
                            sayeth the Lord
                            that hath mercy on thee

                                                                           SOMEONE IN MY CORNER  577

There is Someone in my corner
                                                    He’s there at every round
When the crowd is pulling for me
                                                    And even when I’m down.

At the tugging of the clapper
And the sounding of the bell
There is no fear within me
He has assured me all is well.

I can withstand the vicious onslaught
Fend off each and every blow
For the Savior’s in my corner
As I swing against the foe.

In this winner take all bout
I may lose a round or two
But I’ll still have Him in my corner
When my life on earth is through.

SOFT PILLOWS  42

                                               SOFT PILLOWS  42

                                          There's an old French proverb
that goes "There is no pillow so soft
                                          as a clear conscience."

And, it is difficult to have
                                          a clear conscience...
                                          without having a clean conscience

                                          A clear conscience considers thoughts
that uplift while foregoing those thoughts
that would tend to drag down

                                          A clean conscience presses toward
that which is pure while dismissing
                                          thoughts puerile

Clear and clean may sound like
                                          excellent descriptive adjectives for
                                          laundry detergents...

But, clear and clean may also
be excellent indicators of a soul's
                                          worth

May every night find us resting
                                          on soft pillows

                                                                EASTER (1976)

                                            Jesus the Christ
                                            He is risen
                                            He is alive
                                            History now has a future
                                            As well as a past

                                            That heavy stone
                                            Has been rolled away
                                            That we might witness
                                            An already empty tomb

                                            Hope bursts and floods
                                            Upon and within our hearts
                                            And the adversary is powerless
To halt the triumph of truth

                                            Dead men who once stinketh
                                            Continue to come forth
                                            And so we become
                                            Lazaruses all

                                            Oh ye that weep
                                            Mourn no more
                                            The Author of Easter
                                            Living still
                                            Is in full charge
                                            Alleluia, Amen.

THE LIGHT SWITCH  574

                                          THE LIGHT SWITCH  574

                           Have you ever gotten up
in the middle of the night
and stubbed your toe?                                                                                       Did you know that a stubbed toe
in the pitch dark is more painful
                           than in the daylight?

An anonymous writer gives us this thought...
"We are all in a dark room. If you know
where the light switch is, share the knowledge."

Perhaps it would be best, if we could,
to turn on a light before trying to wander
                           too far in the dark.

Spiritually speaking, who among us does not suffer
                           occasionally from night blindness?

It is those times, when it is the darkest
and we cannot see anything at all,
that we need someone... perhaps you...
to turn on our light switch... to keep us
                           from stumbling in the dark.

A GOOD POEM  590

                  A GOOD POEM  590

              After reading Longfellow's poem,
"The Day is Done," these thoughts
              crossed our mind...

We may get closer to our best selves
by reading a few lines of a good poem
than by any other means we know.

We may feel better about ourselves, our God,
and our fellowman by reading and relaxing
with a few lines of a good uplifting of poem.

We may put aside the strife and strain that
often racks the brain by reading a few lines
of an uplifting poem that encourages and
comforts our mind and soothes the soul.

We read then, these lines of Longfellow
            and rejoice...

"The poem from the treasured volume
            The poem of thy choice,
And lend to the rhyme of the poet
            The beauty of thy voice."

HOURS THAT COUNT  589

                  HOURS THAT COUNT  589

                  An unknown writer has written...

"It's not the hours you put in,
but what you put in the hours
                  that counts."

Did you know that a year with 365 days
is composed of 8,760 hours. Assuming
we average 8 hours of sleep a day,
we have 5,840 waking hours in which to think
                  and feel and act.

In the year ahead, how many of these nearly six
thousand hours shall we glorify our Heavenly Fater and
                  humbly serve our fellow man.

To think in such large terms is somewhat
                  mind-boggling. Perhaps this is one
of the reasons why God segmented
our life's hours into twenty-four hour periods...
that we might better live our life for him... one day...
                  one hour... at a time.

                         To Race Again 587

                         Running

                                              I swiftly go
                         Toward the finish line
                         Turning around
                         I see my nearest competitor
But alas, I fail to see
                         The pebble in my way
                         Twisting my ankle
                         I go down
                         Rapidly, I rebound
                         But it is too late
                         The race is over
                         My time is spent
                         I must wait
                         Until another day
                         To race again

A SON OF MARYLAND  586

A SON OF MARYLAND

I'm happy to be living
                                In this land of liberty
                                That lets others be themselves
And permits me to be me

                                No soldiers come a knocking
At my door, in the dead of night
In my home, my haven, I retire
Free from terror, free from fright

                                I open up my Bible
And read any verse I choose
With no fear of losing life or limb
For believing in God's good news

I'm proud to be an American
I'll say it as often as I can
I'm proud to be an American
                                 And a son of Maryland.

ON GIVING THANKS  584

                                        ON GIVING THANKS  584

                         During the past year,
                         we have encountered many
                         of the typical problems experienced
                         while raising a young family.

                         Often, these problems encouraged us
to become discouraged and to complain
far more frequently than we know we should.

Recently, some of the problems were resolved,
or at least their solutions became foreseeable.

And so, we breathed a sigh of relief
                         and thanked  the Lord.

But, we suspect there is a tendency within us
to complain much louder and more often
than to give thanks to the Lord.

                         We have been continually blessed
by our Heavenly Father. And we hope
in the months to come, our praises
shall far outweigh and out distance our
                         complaints.
