PSALM 15:1,2,5
Lord
who shall abide
in thy tabernacle
who shall dwell
in thy holy hill
He
that walketh uprightly
and worketh rightousness
and
speaketh the truth
in his heart
He
that doeth
these things
shall
never be moved

THE CRITICAL HOUR "One of the illusions of life," wrote Emerson, "is that the present hour is not the critical decisive hour." Every person's destiny is forged and tempered...in the crucible of the present hour. In the next sixty minutes, opportunities will arise... For kind words. What will we say? For elevated thoughts. On what shall we ponder? For decisive actions. What consequences do we envision? Spend wisely, thy witness, oh man, for thy eternity unfolds itself... one hour at a time. SCHOOL'S OUT Another school year is about to end. Vacation, for many, is about to begin. It has often been said, with much veracity, that the teacher learns more than the student. As a perennial student in the school of hard knocks, we have learned much this past school year. For instance, we have learned... It's difficult to have fun all the time Work is a necessity of life We do not have to solve all the world's problems If we don't bother other people, they will seldom bother us Most of last year's problems have been solved or forgotten Comfort and consolation may be found in reading the Scriptures God lets us be who we are until we are ready to change for the better That we should seek to enjoy this life, for it is the only life we have right now. PSALM 14:1,2,7 The fool hath said in his heart there is no God There is none that doeth good The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men to see if there were any that did understand and seek God When the Lord bringeth back the captivity of the people Jacob shall rejoice and Israel shall be glad THE GREATEST DISCOVERY If you were asked, "What has been the greatest discovery in the past hundred years," What would your answer be? The atomic bomb? Penicillin? Polio vaccine? Computer chips? The Internet? Pet Rocks? (Hey, they get my vote!) Perhaps the answers could be as numerous as the stars. However, we are rather partial toward the answer given by that great psychologist, William James... "The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind." Of course, while this principle may have been rediscovered in our generation, it is not really new. Proverbs 23:7 continues to remind us that "as (a man) thinketh in his heart so is he." We become what we think about and ponder upon, day after day. Can we become victorious by continually thinking defeat? Shall we become holy if we continue to permit our minds to wander down the corridors of unholy thoughts? As we think in our hearts, so are we, and so we shall become. May this thought be our greatest discovery of our lives this day. AT ONCE One of our favorite themes or philosophies of the past few years has been...slow down, relax, take life a little easier. However, as with most avenues of thought, there is the opposite view that says, "Take immediate action, get up, get going, right now." It was President Calvin Coolidge who once said, "We cannot do everything at once, but we can do something at once." Oftentimes, moments do come in which we... should pray at once get out of harm's way at once forgo our sins at once express a kind thought at once forgive others' trespasses at once think of God's blessings at once We may not become perfect overnight but we may take another step in that direction if we so choose, at once. PSALM 13:1,2,5,6 How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? Forever? How long wilt thou hide thy face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul? But I have trusted in thy mercy My heart shall rejoice in thy salvation I will sing unto the Lord because he hath dealt bountifully with me ON BEING OLD FASHIONED Every younger generation likes to think of their parents' generation as being "old-fashioned." Perhaps this is appropriate. For after all, here are some things that have continuously remained old-fashioned (to the degree that they have been around for a very long time)... War Lust Anger Hate Selfishness Greed Sin Death And, of course, through the centuries, the following traits have also remained old-fashioned... Forgiveness Redemption Resurrection Patience Persistence Tenderness Kindness Faith Hope Love Indeed, from the beginning, every generation has been old-fashioned. There's no sin in being old-fashioned. It is only a sin to remain an old-fashioned sinner. CLICK, CLICK (This article was written in March, 1977) Well, they finally came back... We're talking about those wonderful elementary school portraits that millions of parents are induced to buy each year. In addition to all four kids, old Mom and Dad optimistically had their pictures taken also. As with most things in life, some photos turned out great, while others probably should have been left in the darkroom. For instance, Tammy's and Heather's pictures turned out just beautifully. And, Billy's will always be cherished for it clearly shows the spaces where baby teeth had once resided. And Matt's pix portray the wind blown boldness of a five year-old. Mommy asked us to be kind when we wrote about her picture, so the best we can do in that case, is to go on to a brief description of our own photograph. We had our picture taken while wearing a bright red tie and bright green coat. When the pictures came back, our coat had turned to a dingy gray. And, what with our 5 o'clock shadow showing, our whole face just sort of slid down into our coat. The best thing about the picture was the blue background. Hopefully, when the picture of our inner man is exposed, the finest features shall be found in the man...not in the background. OUR MOTHERS In the struggles and the strife The vicissitudes of life Our mothers are always there Every cloudburst filled with rain In sorrow and in pain Our mothers are always there In our triumphs and our wins Light laughter and coquettish grins Our mothers are always there At dawn with each new sunrise At bedtime with no surprise Our mothers are always there Tucking us in with a goodnight kiss Ending our day with a note of bless Our mothers are always there With days of child's play now long gone Memories of delightful times continue on Our mothers are always there Now these lines are but a token Of our love that goes unspoken To our mothers who are always there |
