(The following is one of a series of articles
we wrote while taking what became known
to our family in 1977 as our Great Western
Trek, as we travelled from Maryland to Utah.)
ARIZONA HORSESHOES
Our suitcases are loaded with many
wonderful mementos and souvenirs.
But, one of our most prized acquisitions
is a sackful of five old rusty Arizona horseshoes.
We were given these shoes while visiting some
of our closest friends whom we knew while
living for a few years in Oklahoma.
These shoes recollect former days of friendly
family get-togethers, missionary journeys,
hearts and spades.
These shoes represent lives and loves, kinship
and friendship unbroken by time or distance.
We are glad we were able to swing by and visit
our old friends, Dennis and Juanita Smith and
their family.
Just some old rusty horseshoes, but we shall
treasure them well.
