(The following is one of a series of articles
we wrote while taking what became known
to our family in 1977 as our Great Western
Trek, as we travelled from Maryland to Utah.)
GET IN GEAR
During the morning of the first day of
our "Great Western Trek", we drove into
a gas station, and rolled down our window
to give the attendant our request.
(Ah, those were the good old days when
someone pumped the gas and cleaned
the windshields for you!)
As we rolled down our window, the window
knob came loose and kept going 'round and
around as though to say, "Ha , ha...See, I'm
going to do my own thing, and there's nothing
you can do about it."
At that moment, that window knob became
of no earthly use to anybody. Many of us
become like that at times. We go 'round
and around in our own conceited circles,
while accomplishing little of eternal value.
Like that freewheeling window knob, we need
to get in gear...
Get in gear with Engineer of the Universe, so
that we might function smoothly and in harmony
with God and our fellow men. And, be of some
earthly value while we may.
