THE ROCK THAT ROLLED AWAY
This is a simple story
Of a rock that rolled away
It had its certain destiny
It had its part to play
For centuries it had stood
Unobtrusively on a hill
Never realizing for a moment
God had a place for it to fill
For without the templed city walls
Into a lonely hill was hewn
A sepulchre so cold and bare
It would be occupied, and soon
For The Crucifided was laid within
He who bore our sorrows, yet knew no sin
He loved his sheep, and they loved him
This Son of God, and Lord of men
So, this stone, this rock
Was hastily rolled in place
As men who once were brave
Now covered their eyes in low disgrace
With the dawning
Of a brand new day
Christ's friends returned
To weep and pray
But, upon arriving at the tomb
They found the rock was rolled away
And astonishment replaced their gloom
As the sun rose o"er break of day
At first the disciples hearts
Were filled with fright
As they listened intently
To angels, dressed in white
The Lord Jesus whom you seek
True to his word has risen
And has taken control
Of the debtors prison
(And from that day forward
They went on their way rejoicing)
So, roll on, o stone, roll on
Roll on o rock, roll away
As we celebrate the beginning
Of this Resurrection Day
Roll on, roll on, roll on
(Written for Easter 1980)
